Shaker fatigue testing optimized with ALGOR FEA
When Hamler Test and Analysis, a consulting firm located in Cookeville, TN, needed to perform shaker fatigue testing of a compressor blade from a gas turbine engine, they used linear dynamic finite element analysis (FEA) software from ALGOR to simulate the test and determine the optimal setup. "One good test is worth more than a thousand expert opinions,” says Jesse Hamler, president and CTO of HTA. “[It] saved weeks of trial-and-error testing, if not months." Read the full article
Manager’s Forum: Creating a mission to drive business objectives
When VXI Technology, Inc. (VTI) was incorporated in 1990 and started business as a custom engineering house, its initial focus was high-performance instrumentation, specializing in precision low-frequency analog and digital solutions. While a custom engineering group with small manufacturing capability provides a significant value for its customers, it does not allow the business to easily scale and grow. VTI’s CEO and president, Paul Dhillon, talks about what it took to take his business — and more importantly, the business’ culture — to the next level. Read the full article
The performance of a lifetime The 35000 series (size 14) double stack hybrid linear actuators provide higher force, longer life and improved performance. The various patent pending designs deliver exceptional performance and new linear motion design opportunities. Three designs are available, captive, non-captive and external linear versions. The 35000 Series is available in a wide variety of resolutions - from 0.00012" (.003048 mm) per step to 0.00192" (.048768 mm) per step. The motors can also be microstepped for even finer resolutions. The Size 14 actuator delivers thrust of up to 50 lbs. (23 Kg). For more information visit Haydon Switch & Instrument online.
MIT develops a “paper towel” for oil spills
A mat of nanowires with the touch and feel of paper could be an important new tool in the cleanup of oil and other organic pollutants, MIT researchers and colleagues reported in the May 30 online issue of Nature Nanotechnology. The scientists say they have created a membrane that can absorb up to 20 times its weight in oil and can be recycled many times for future use. Read the full article
Wheels: Most hybrids not the solution to high gas prices
With high gas prices, hybrid cars are a more affordable option than ever in terms of gas mileage, but only a handful of hybrid cars make solid financial sense, and only for some consumers, according to a new study by NADAguides.com, a vehicle pricing and information website. Using recent gas prices for 10 major metropolitan areas, the company studied the number of miles needed to recoup the extra cost of buying a hybrid car over its gasoline-only counterpart. 5-Star Product: 3-axis beam control revolutionizes laser marking
The KEYENCE MD-V9900 is a high-speed, high-quality YVO4 laser marker that has the ability to mark not only in the X and Y direction, but also in the Z direction. This unique 3-axis motion allows for a multitude of advantages, such as a 42-mm variable focal length, distortion-free 300-mm x 300-mm marking area, and the ability to clearly mark on difficult shapes (cylinders, cones, inclined planes). Engineer’s Toolbox: Latest TruckSim is dynamic design ride
TruckSim 7 offers a new architecture and many other features that make it “extensible,” according to Mechanical Simulation Corporation’s chief technology officer Michael Sayers. TruckSim is software for simulating the dynamic vehicle behavior of heavy-duty vehicles with dual wheels, asymmetric steering systems, multiple axles, and (optionally) single or multiple trailers.
