No more spark plugs? BorgWarner set to advance next-generation fuel-efficient ignition technology
BorgWarner (Auburn Hill, MI) has its sights set on commercializing a high-frequency ignition technology for leaner burning engines of the future. The technology, which aims to replace conventional spark plugs, was recently purchased from Florida-based Etatech, Inc.
Unlike traditional engine ignition systems that rely on heat to initiate combustion, the new patented technology generates a high-energy electrostatic field inside the combustion chamber that greatly improves combustion efficiency and speed, and consistently ignites the leanest air-fuel mixtures. With little or no heat-related electrode erosion, maintenance is virtually eliminated. To further improve engine performance, the system electronically controls various characteristics of the combustion cycle, further reducing emissions, improving efficiency, and increasing horsepower.
BorgWarner says that the high-frequency ignition technology enables high-performing, lean burning engines to significantly improve fuel economy and reduce emissions compared with conventional combustion technologies. Independent lab tests touted by the company showed peak energy efficiency improved up to 40%, NOx emissions decreased 80%, and CO2 emissions fell 50%.
The technology is expected to be incorporated into powertrain applications across various markets and regions in the next few years.
"The significant improvements in fuel economy and emissions provided by this technology may revolutionize the industry," says Tim Manganello, BorgWarner chairman and CEO. "Our focus on reducing emissions, increasing fuel economy, and improving engine performance makes this technology a perfect fit for BorgWarner."

Finishing system for iron and non-stainless steel parts
![](5.19.09_images/905df-333.jpg)
Using a two-stage oxidation process, Tru Temp finishing system forms a black magnetite finish on all iron and non-stainless steel parts. Operating at 200°F, the process is safe to bring in-house and easy to manage. The result is a non-dimensional, satin black finish that is intended to enhance the corrosion resistance of all types of tooling and machine components — with a 25-min. turnaround time. The process contains no EPA-regulated chemicals; in most cases, no waste treatment is needed. Tru Temp uses seven tanks (each 16 x 24 x 24 in. deep) and occupies a 3 x 15 ft area. The tanks are constructed of 10-gauge welded steel or 1/2-in. welded polypropylene, and they are supplied with heating elements and plumbing connections.

Stainless steel, half-hex threaded inserts
![](5.12.09_images/905df-233.jpg)
Atlas SpinTite is a stainless steel, half-hex shank-threaded insert designed to offer improved corrosion resistance. The inserts are developed to provide a fastening solution for “blind” attachment applications where only one side of a panel is accessible for assembly. The hex body design promotes high resistance to rotations, and a low-profile head minimizes protrusions. Atlas SpinTite is a practical alternative to tapped holes, weld nuts, rivets, and self-drilling or tapping screws. The inserts can be used in panels of any hardness and as thin as 0.020 in. (0.51 mm). They are offered in unified and metric thread sizes from #8-32 through 5/16-18 and M4 through M8.

Off-the-shelf slide tables
![](4.21.09_images/904df-332.jpg)
The DryLin slide tables from igus are available pre-assembled and off the shelf. These compact linear units incorporate liners made of the company’s dry-running iglide plastic bearings, which require no maintenance. Dirt and dust cannot adhere to lubricant and affect performance or cause shaft damage, a problem with more expensive, re-circulating ball bearing systems. The plastic liners also confer a low coefficient of friction, wear, and corrosion resistance. Versions HTS and torsion-resistant SLW offer a choice of shaft, carriage, and spindle materials. Also available is DryLin ZLW, a belt-driven system designed to rapidly position small loads and suited for apps in the medical industry. DryLin EasyTube is a simple, low-cost, maintenance-free linear unit for format adjustments in applications involving temperatures up to 176°F.
