| Opinion: Building a better normal for manufacturing I am anxious to see what the new normal will be once we are all allowed to go back to work. I find it hard to believe things will return to the way they used to be. We have spent the last 40 years investing in making what goes on inside our four walls more efficient. Now that many of us are not allowed in the building, the cost of not being able to do business is much greater than the incremental savings our old technologies have given us. | Wow. Researchers claim new material can't be cut Engineers in England at Durham University and their research partners have created what they say is the first manufactured, "non-cuttable" material. Their unlikely design inspirations? Grapefruit and abalone shell. In tests, the metallic foam material could not be cut by angle grinders, drills, or high-pressure water jets.

| Engineering plastic with optimized sliding friction properties for automotive BASF has just launched an engineering plastic that is particularly suited for automotive parts that come into contact with hot oil. The new polyethersulfone (PESU) Ultrason E0510 C2TR shows very good tribological properties, high oil resistance, and excellent dimensional stability. The injection-molding grade with a 10 percent carbon-fiber reinforcement can be used within a wide temperature range between -30 and 180 C. It is easy to process because of its low viscosity and very good flow properties.

| TDK brings redundancy to its TMR angle sensor portfolio TDK has announced the expansion of its tunnel-magnetoresistance (TMR) angle sensor portfolio with the new digital TAD4140 sensor, designed for demanding automotive and industrial applications. Compared to TDK's existing digital angle sensor (the TAD2141), the new TAD4140 features full redundancy with two signal processor units and 2x2 TMR bridges in a single TSSOP16 package. Both angle sensors are capable of contactless sensing up to 360 degrees. The new sensor is able to simultaneously measure speed, direction, and motor position, making it suitable for motor-control applications such as Brushless DC (BLDC) motor commutation in electric power-assisted steering (EPAS) systems.

| Dual-curing sealant from DELO used in connectors for automotive electronics DELO has introduced a light- and humidity-curing sealant for silver-coated connectors that are often found in vehicle control units or sensors. DELO DUALBOND GE4918 offers very good pin-sealing properties, increases connector life, and allows efficient production. It not only adheres very well to mercaptan silver-pin coatings, but also adheres to the typical connector housing materials PA and PBT, even under the stringent conditions of the automotive sector. The one-component product is easy to dispense, shows good flow properties, and can be fixed in 10 to 20 sec with the help of high-intensity UV light. With this new sealant, automotive suppliers can benefit from its silicone-like properties without having to take special precautions in their production, as is the case with silicones.
