55 Years Ago: Gemini IX -- Tragedy, problems, progress
The primary goals of Project Gemini included proving the techniques required for the Apollo Program to land a man on the Moon and return him safely to Earth before the end of the 1960s. Paramount among those was rendezvous and docking, required to implement the Lunar Orbit Rendezvous method NASA chose for the Moon landing missions. The goals of Gemini IX included docking with a target vehicle and conducting a lengthy spacewalk during a three-day mission. Much of the mission did not go according to plan.

Navy hybrid drone attempting multi-day flight operations
U.S. Naval Research Laboratory engineers recently demonstrated the 55-lb-max-weight Hybrid Tiger, an electric unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with multi-day endurance flight capability, at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland. Its power management system hybridizes solar energy with other on-board energy sources including battery-electric and a hydrogen fuel cell in a lightweight form factor.

Image - What are piezoelectric active shims?
What are piezoelectric active shims?
Active shims, such as PIRest from Physik Instrumente, can readjust the gap between two components in a machine at any time with nanometer precision. Due to the piezo element's high resolution down to the nanometer range, active shims cover applications in classical mechanical precision engineering, as well as the alignment of optical components in astronomy, semiconductor manufacturing, and in materials research employing beam-line instrumentation.

Integrated motor/actuator replaces hydraulics
Curtiss-Wright's Actuation Division has just released its newest integrated motor/actuator, the Exlar GTX060. This is the third frame size in the GTX series of industrial electromechanical actuators. The GTX Series offers force, precision, and repeatability while eliminating or minimizing the maintenance and inefficiencies typical of fluid power alternatives. With continuous force ratings up to 2,668 N (600 lbf) and speeds to 1,016 mm/sec (40 in./sec) in both VAC and VDC power options, the GTX060's compact form can be applied across a wide range of automation applications.

Handle basic misalignments starting at 10 bucks
AutomationDirect has added SIM drive couplings to their line of mechanical power transmission products. SIM drive couplings are power transmission components used to couple the shafts of various mechanical devices, often of different sizes, and compensate for shaft misalignment. Four different styles of couplings are available: Jaw/Spider couplings provide a wide range of fitment and higher torque, Oldham couplings provide a higher speed rating and allow for a higher misalignment of mated shafts, servo beam-style couplings add a significant increase to speed rating and have zero backlash, while high-gain couplings offer the highest speed ratings, excellent vibration absorption, and zero backlash.

Ouster-Danfoss partner to bring lidar to off-highway vehicles
Ouster sensors will be the first lidar hardware to be offered through the Danfoss PLUS+1 Partner Program, which is engineered to expedite the development process and bring higher quality machines to market faster. This integration is intended for remote machine management, operator assistance, row following, obstacle avoidance, and task automation. The PLUS+1 Partner Program is a select group of companies with complementary products -- including microcontrollers, joysticks, hydraulic pumps, and radar sensors -- that integrate into PLUS+1 systems the same way all Danfoss hardware components do.

Control any air conditioning unit remotely
HMS Networks has just launched the new IR-based Intesis AC interface that enables integration of any air conditioning unit, regardless of brand, into Modbus or BACnet Building Automation Systems. This universal interface connects to the AC unit via the IR link that is already used by most AC units to communicate with their remote control. The Intesis IR-based AC Interface is already compatible with more than 100 IR remote controllers and their associated AC units. Simple setup and configuration via MAPS template.

Graphene Hall sensor for cryogenic applications -- including quantum computing
How futuristic is this? U.K. company Paragraf has introduced a graphene Hall sensor that enables commercial organizations to measure high magnetic field strengths accurately at cryogenic temperatures, increasing manufacturing throughput by quicker magnet mapping and replacing existing NMR probe mapping stages. The GHS-C is the only Hall sensor now in volume production that can offer this level of performance at temperatures below 3 K. It is being supplied in the industry-standard LCC 20 package, making it a drop-in replacement for existing Hall sensors. Applications include quantum computing, high-energy physics labs, cryogenic cooling equipment, fusion, medical accelerators, ultra-low-temp research, and magnet manufacturing.
