Heads Up: Vehicle safety technology migration A new report from the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) shows that it typically takes three decades for a promising safety feature first introduced in a few luxury cars to spread to 95% of vehicles on the road. Wow. We thought it was more like 10 or 15 years, at most. This report is only available in .pdf form (sorry about that, but luckily it's formatted like a mag article).

Improving fire-fighting techniques in space and getting a better understanding of fuel combustion here on Earth are the focus of a series of experiments on the International Space Station, led by a professor at the Jacobs School of Engineering at the University of California, San Diego. A first round of experiments ran from March 2009 to December 2011. A second round kicked off in January and is set to last a year or more.

From flight envelope expansion to mission systems, and KC-10 fuel testing to sensor fusion, the team made great strides testing the F-35A fighter, a conventional takeoff and landing craft that is the smallest, lightest F-35 version and the only one in the series equipped with an internal cannon. The fighter's fraternal twin, the F-35B, is a short-takeoff and vertical-landing craft.
