| Two new rifles coming to Army close-combat soldiers The U.S. Army recently awarded a contract to manufacturer SIG SAUER for two new weapons for soldiers involved in close-quarters combat. The XM5 will replace the M4/M4A1 carbine rifle, while the XM250 will replace the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon. In addition to improved accuracy, the new firing systems provide greater energy on the target.

| Smarter 3D printing makes better parts faster 3D printers may soon get better at producing intricate metal and plastic parts, thanks to new software developed at the University of Michigan that reduces harmful heat buildup in laser powder bed fusion printers. Called SmartScan, the software demonstrated a 41% improvement in heat distribution and a 47% reduction in deformations.
