New technique helps robots pack objects into a tight space
Anyone who has ever tried to pack a family-sized amount of luggage into a sedan-sized trunk knows this is a hard problem. Robots struggle with dense packing tasks, too. MIT researchers used a form of generative AI, called a diffusion model, to solve this problem more efficiently.

Image - Foldable gasket for battery electric vehicles
Foldable gasket for battery electric vehicles
More than one million units of Freudenberg Sealing Technologies' new type of foldable gaskets for electric vehicles have been produced. The gaskets help prevent splash water from entering through the gap between the battery cover and housing. A segmented aluminum carrier with multiple sealing profiles on the outer edge provides strength while also integrating plastic retention fixtures used to attach the gasket quickly and efficiently to the battery housing cover. The carrier segments are interconnected with a continuous sealing profile that is highly flexible, so it can compensate for small manufacturing tolerances in the housing.

Image - Magnetic springs for gravity compensation applications
Magnetic springs for gravity compensation applications
MSP-A Series magnetic springs from Akribis Systems are an attractive choice for industrial z-axis, direct drive module applications that call for a high-speed means of gravity compensation, self-locking capabilities to prevent unwanted component movement during power-off states, or constant force within a specific travel range. Leveraging the stored energy of permanent magnets inside a slider and stator, magnetic springs maintain a constant direction and magnitude within a specific travel range. There is no need for external power and control, linear guides, or expensive air systems. Applications include 3D printing, robots, textile equipment, pumps, and compressors.

Metal Work Regtronic pneumatic transducers from AutomationDirect
AutomationDirect has added Metal Work Regtronic series electro-pneumatic transducers to its offerings. The transducers use two internal solenoid valves to convert an electronic signal from a PLC or other controller to a regulated precision linear pneumatic output pressure. This dual-solenoid design eliminates continuous supply air consumption, reducing operational costs. Models are available with low flow and exhaust capacity for controlling small-volume pneumatic loads without overshoot, and high flow and exhaust capacity for fast response times with large-volume pneumatic loads.
