What is a sapphire piston used for -- and who can make one?
If you want a prototype piston made of metal for research purposes, you have a lot of options -- you can even 3D print your own. But what if you need something much more exotic, like the second-hardest natural material? When Mid Michigan Research had just such a need, it turned to Insaco for the company's long history of custom fabrication of sapphire precision parts, often in unusual forms.

What are Crossed Roller Bearings?
Learn all about HIWIN Crossed Roller Bearings that are three to four times more rigid than standard bearing solutions and are capable of handling loads in the axial, radial, and moment directions. They consist of an outer ring, an inner ring, and a plurality of rollers and spacers. The roller lies between the inner and outer ring with the spacers placed between the rollers to prevent the mutual friction between them, thereby decreasing the torque resistance for rotation. Many options are available depending on the level of rigidity needed.

Why Veterans Day has a special meaning to me
Another Veterans Day has passed. Many Americans had a day off, stores had the usual sales. At Arlington National Cemetery, there was a Veterans Day National Observance that included a wreath-laying at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Across the country, thousands of speeches were delivered. For me, Veterans Day has a very special meaning that I share with probably a million other veterans -- the loss of a good friend who was killed in combat. By Frank Misurelli, Picatinny Arsenal

How suction sails work on huge ships
bound4blue is a company based in Spain making waves in the shipping industry with its innovative eSAIL suction sails, which produce six to seven times more lift than a conventional sail but are rigid towers. Looking like giant cylinders, bound4blue says its technology, which ranges in height from 12 m to 36 m, works "by utilizing a fan system to drag air across the sail's aerodynamically optimized surface, generating propulsive efficiency." The company says in some applications on large ships, a pair of autonomously controlled eSAILs can cut fuel consumption and carbon emissions by 15%. Several cargo and tanker ships are testing the technology in installations of one to four units. [Credit: Image courtesy of bound4blue]
