Football field-size space radiators are part of NASA Mars nuclear propulsion plan
One option NASA is exploring to get to Mars faster is nuclear electric propulsion, which would require a huge heat dissipation system -- too big to fit inside a single rocket and unfold later. Researchers are looking into how to assemble it robotically and autonomously in space.

Machine man reflects on 50 years in a challenging but rewarding field
For a half-century, ANCA has made the machines that make the tools that make the world go around. One-half of its founding pair, Pat McCluskey, has designed many grinding machine tools in that time, been part of some machine-building world firsts, and worked hard to create an apprentice program that helps propel the young people of today, and ANCA, into a successful future. Inspiring.

Can Kevlar get better? The future of armor could be a new chainmail-like polymer
A Northwestern University-led research team has developed the first two-dimensional mechanically interlocked material. With 100 trillion mechanical bonds per square centimeter, it contains the highest density of mechanical bonds ever achieved. When added to Ultem (a material in the same family as Kevlar), it produced dramatic increases in overall strength and toughness.

Neat! Custom-molded desiccants are also structural components
AGM's injection molded desiccants allow engineers to ensure moisture protection in their designs without worrying about space and shape constraints. These molded desiccants are built to customers' specified sizes, shapes, and thicknesses, and are strong enough to be used as structural components. These desiccants are comprised of 4A molecular sieve in addition to proprietary binders. They deliver high adsorption capacity -- even at low humidity levels. Many applications, including aerospace, med devices, optics, and more.

Image - How Sandia research could save Earth from asteroids
How Sandia research could save Earth from asteroids
The most efficient way to prevent potentially dangerous asteroids from damaging or even obliterating our planet may involve a coordinated nuclear response based on extensive prior data, according to Sandia National Laboratories physicist Nathan Moore. But how do you beat gravity temporarily to test this on Earth? You use the Z machine.

Robots: Navy ship deck gets advanced non-skid coating
The U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) has installed an advanced, metallized Thermal Spray Nonskid (TSN) coating system on the USS Kearsarge flight deck using the state-of-the-art Thermal Spray Robotic Vehicle (TSRV). The TSRV robot automates the process of applying the functional TSN, further improving efficiency and reducing costs. The TSRV combines multiple steps of the TSN application process, from deck prep -- including blasting -- to spraying the heat-resistant non-skid solution. Estimated coating lifetime is 10 to 12 years compared to the three-year lifetime of the ship's current coating. The coating application is also two to three times faster.
