The Protomold Design Cube illustrates important considerations when designing plastic injection molded parts. It showcases a range of available surface finishes and examples of bosses, gussets, and ribs. It also demonstrates the impact on part quality of overly thick or thin sections, as well as ways to incorporate holes and their potential effect on resin flow.

PEEK plastic gains ground as titanium alternative for cranial implants
Titanium-plate cranial implants, customized with CAD/CAM-processed CT data, have been the most-used solution for skull injuries to date. But the material and the machining methods approved to produce them can be expensive and time consuming. Now the focus has turned to laser-sintered cranial implants made from PEEK plastic.

Triboelectric generator produces electricity by harnessing frictional forces
Georgia Tech researchers have discovered yet another way to harvest small amounts of electricity from motion in the world around us – this time by capturing the electrical charge produced when two different kinds of plastic materials rub against one another. Based on flexible polymer materials, this "triboelectric" generator could provide alternating current (AC) from activities such as walking.

Wheels (and wings):
Aircraft engineered with failure in mind may last longer

What if aircraft and other complex systems could be designed from the outset to operate not in the optimal scenario, like is traditionally done, but for suboptimal conditions?

Unit and hardness converter iPhone app

Sealing specialist Trelleborg's iPhone app "Unit and Hardness Converter" surpassed 100,000 downloads in just the first five months of its release. This app helps you convert frequently used, basic engineering units and even worldwide currencies in an efficient and convenient way. It comes with a hardness converter based on ISO and ASTM standards to quickly switch between popular hardness scales for various material types. The app can be used in a wide range of design situations, whether related to sealing or not. No charge. Available from iTunes or Apple App Store ("Trelleborg Converter").

Engineer's Toolbox:
A down-to-earth flight plan for manufacturing success

ITT Aerospace uses Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA) software to simplify component designs and improve manufacturability. In one impressive example, the redesign of a 30-year-old air-duct valve netted a 48% parts reduction, cut assembly time and labor by two-thirds, and reduced total project cost by 77%.

High-temp surface-mount LED displays

Lumex has launched its QuasarBrite high-temperature surface-mount (SMD) seven-segment numeric LED display technology capable of providing bright, crisp display performance in market-leading temperature ranges up to 105°C. As a surface-mount technology compatible with lead-free soldering, the new technology can eliminate the need for the additional soldering step required with through-hole displays, saving time and reducing manual labor requirements by up to 80%. Perfect for standard and commercial appliances, medical devices, industrial control devices, military applications, and telecom equipment.

Turn standard PCs into powerful multi-axis machine controllers

ACS Motion Control has developed a software-based EtherCAT motion control platform that maximizes performance while minimizing costs for semiconductor, HDD, biomedical, PV equipment, and LED manufacturers. The SPiiPlusSC (soft controller) enables standard PCs to run a 64-axis real-time motion controller and high-speed PLC entirely in software. The advanced soft-controller solution simplifies the connectivity of the entire motion control system by eliminating dedicated controller hardware as well as Windows dependence or latency.

Watch scientists try to explain Higgs Boson
While most of us were chomping down hot dogs or watching 15-second fireworks displays during the Fourth of July, a bunch of scientists in Switzerland were announcing the discovery of the Higgs Boson particle (sort of), which most lazy journalists (and TV reporters) called "The God Particle," which annoyed all of those scientists even more. What's the fuss all about? Check out these six videos courtesy of IT World (this funny intro courtesy of IT World, too).
