Space Task Group reports to President Nixon Still bathing in the afterglow of the successful Moon landing, the Space Task Group presented its 29-page report, "The Post-Apollo Space Program: Directions for the Future," to President Nixon on Sep. 15, 1969. In its Conclusions and Recommendations section, the report noted that the United States should pursue a balanced robotic and human space program, with a long-term goal of a human mission to Mars before the end of the 20th century.

| Spark-proof EC fans use 50% less energy Orion Fans has extended its electronically commutated (EC) fan product offering to include a 254-mm IP68-ATEX-rated version for waterproof and harsh environment applications. The low-power OA254EC-ATEX Series EC fan combines energy conservation with maximum protection for power-hungry applications involving explosive atmospheres or flammable gases. It delivers air flows of 500 to 830 CFM. EC fans can be used in most any AC fan application with the added benefit of power savings of up to 50 percent. EC fans often enable customers to meet energy-consumption requirements from agencies like ENERGY STAR. Ideal as a drop-in replacement for AC fans, the larger OA254 IP68-ATEX Series EC fans are suited for oil & gas applications including oil rig and oil refining equipment. | First subsea actuator to have advantages of both electro-mechanical and electro-hydraulic systems The Subsea Valve Actuator (SVA) from Rexroth is an electro-mechanical actuator with hydrostatic drive designed to complete the range of traditional hydraulic and all-electric subsea actuators for subsea control and production systems. It achieves the same safety performance as hydraulic actuators, but with much better reliability. It also provides a simple electric interface similar to those in all-electric actuators (without umbilicals for hydraulic fluid power). | First semi-transparent polyamide good for car interior lighting The BASF product Ultramid Vision has been used in a car interior for the first time. The semi-crystalline polyamide is employed in the window regulator module of a German automobile manufacturer. Compared to opaque standard polyamides, Ultramid Vision displays very high light transmission with low light scattering, which makes it a perfect choice for use with the illuminated symbols on the window regulators and for setting the exterior mirrors. The requirement was to allow as much light to pass through as possible, with high color fidelity.

| New valve train design claims 20% fuel savings Engineers at Empa, the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology, have invented a novel new valve train concept that introduces simplified tech for valve opening and closing, uses hydraulics, and saves a marked amount of fuel for automobile applications. The FlexWork valve train has been running on an Empa engine test bench since October 2018 and has survived millions of cycles in fired engine operation flawlessly.
